The lawyer for Dagoberto Moreno-Romero, who is accused of attacking and injuring his wife then fleeing to New Mexico with their child in a stolen car, asked for more law enforcement records related to the case.

On Monday, attorney Alex Haynes told the judge that almost a month had elapsed since this client’s arrest, yet Haynes still had not received all the documents needed to represent Moreno-Romero fully.

District Attorney Don Nottingham explained there were “hundreds of documents” pending approval from various agencies, but he would ask his staff to get them to Moreno-Romero’s lawyer, Haynes. All the parties attended Monday’s hearing virtually as the victim listened in with an interpreter.

The night of July 27, Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus driver Lamar Hawkins came to the aid of a badly injured and bleeding woman near Buttermilk Ski Area. Hawkins alerted Aspen police, which rushed to the scene.

According to the arrest warrant, Hawkins told police that a Toyota Highlander cut in front of the bus, trying to force it to stop. The injured woman told police Moreno-Romero cut her with a razor blade, beat her, sexually assaulted her, and bound her with duct tape.

Later that night, Snowmass Village police reported a stolen Chevy Trailblazer with a kayak on top. It belonged to a young rafting guide who had parked near a campsite for the night. While searching for his Chevy, the guide came across Moreno-Romero’s abandoned vehicle.

Moreno-Romero is currently incarcerated. The judge scheduled his next court appearance for Sept. 18.
